PreHab: PreSurgical Preparation

PreHab™: Pre-Operative Education & Preparation

At Sierra Regional Spine Institute Physical Therapy we offer PreHab™, a comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation that is performed by a physical therapist. The therapist and patient meet for a one-on-one discussion. The patient is provided with training regarding specific protocols for recovery after spinal surgery. This is a great opportunity for the patient to get answers regarding any personal concerns they might have and is a time to brainstorm solutions to any unique mobility issues that might arise in the patient’s home environment. Our goal is to alleviate a patient’s fears through detailed education. Patients are given a thorough written handout with tips for home mobility and pain management concepts.

Patients preparing for an upcoming spinal surgery face a daunting task

Some might need to arrange for time away from work or find someone to provide assistance for daily activities or household chores. There may be issues related to insurance coverage or a financial burden. But the most pressing challenge may come from feelings of anxiety. Patients can have fears related to impending pain, mobility difficulties, or stress about following precautions or protocols. Fear of the unknown can play an important role in how a person recovers from surgery. It is reported that patients who have suitable pre-operative training and education have improved outcomes with quicker recovery after surgery.

Pre-operative education also plays an important role in overall satisfaction of the patient undergoing a surgery

Patients often feel that a surgeon is proactive in offering surgery, but then doesn’t follow through with answering questions or easing concerns. This tends to give patients negative feelings after a surgery- even if their recovery is good. Good pre-operative education is critical in maximizing a patient’s post-operative potential.

A Pre-surgical training session covers the following topics:

  • Absolute Precautions
  • Bed Mobility/Transfer Techniques
  • Car Mobility/Seating
  • Walking Strategies
  • Hygiene and Dressing Techniques
  • Proper Lifting/Body Mechanics Training
  • Instruction in Incision/Wound Management
  • Pain Management Strategies
  • Smoking Cessation Resources
  • Nutrition Guidelines
  • Instruction in gentle post-operative exercises

Patients have had favorable responses to our PreHab™ program. Many have felt their recovery was easier as they had a better understanding of what to expect and found they had a resource to resort to if problems arose. Patients feel they learned to be realistic about their expectations after their surgery.
